DRUGS AND BIOLOLGICS IN VETERINARY MEDICINE
Legal Issues Pertaining to the Use of Drugs in Veterinary Practice (2 hours)
Not a day goes by without veterinarians’ daily practices being regulated by the FDA, APHIS, DEA or EPA. These are governmental agencies that have promulgated rules and regulations that govern how veterinarians obtain, use and dispense drugs, biologics, and pesticides. This seminar presents an overview of the law and regulations that veterinarians are expected to abide by. Approved by Florida BVM for 2 Pharmacology CEUs.
Internet Pharmacies and the Boogie Man – What They Have in Common (1-2 hours)
Over the past several years, internet pharmacies have engaged in an assertive campaign to directly sell drugs to pet owners, thereby undermining the VCPR and a portion of a veterinary hospital’s gross revenue. The profession has been challenged with how to best deal with these new competitors and have enlisted the support of state veterinary associations and pharmaceutical companies to bring lawsuits to stop their illegal practices. This presentation will review the issues and provide some practical tips to deal with the threat of internet pharmacies.
Compounding Drugs and Extra-Label Drug Use? Watch Your Step! (1 hour)
The contemporary practice of veterinary medicine presents unique difficulties concerning legal and ethical drug use in our patients. Compared to the introduction of human drugs, few new animal drugs come to market, and this has left veterinarians heavily dependent upon the use of human drugs for animals. The relatively short supply of approved animal drugs in convenient formulations has led to the widespread practice of drug “compounding." What is compounding? When is it the standard of practice? The ins and outs and appropriate use of FDA approved and compounded formulations will be discussed.
Vaccine Liability: Truth or Myth? (1 hour)
Animals have historically been characterized as property under the law, allowing for nominal damages when they have been injured. A recent movement by animal advocates and their lawyers to increase the damages pet owners may receive as a result of a veterinarian's negligence has caused veterinarians to look into the standard of care as it relates to use of drugs and vaccines. The complexity of how drugs and vaccines are regulated has created a lot of confusion for private practitioners, who may be erroneously applying "drug" malpractice principles to "vaccines". This lecture will address the principles of malpractice and explore the risks associated with using vaccines "off-label".
